Our faculty, researchers, staff, and students participate in a wide range of events — including workshops, lectures, and demonstrations — in schools and for the general public. In all, the outreach efforts of the UW Department of Astronomy serve more than 4000 people per year. Activities in the Seattle metropolitan area include:
- Shows in the UW Planetarium (or have the UW Mobile Planetarium come to you!)
- Public talks and telescope viewing at the Theodor Jacobsen Observatory
- Public presentations at Astronomy on Tap
There are also outreach and education programs made possible by grants received by our department members:
- Raising eSTEAM: an organization committed to raising the eSTEAM (education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Astrobiology/Art, Mathematics) of incarcerated youth in the Seattle area with one-on-one tutoring and exciting hands-on science experiments.
- Pre-MAP: an enrichment program for incoming UW students who are traditionally underrepresented in astronomy, such as low-income and/or first-generation college students.
For more astronomy outreach events, check the programming at the Seattle Astronomical Society and the Battle Point Astronomical Association.
